CBB Player Updates from May 10-11
The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.
The Core Four – four key updates
- UMKC guard RayQwandis Mitchell is transferring to Penn State, which will actually be his fourth school. He began at Idaho, spent two seasons at Illinois-Chicago, then last year at Kansas City averaged 17.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 1.6 apg while playing 35.5 mpg. He joins a large Penn State incoming transfer class also consisting of Ace Baldwin, Zach Hicks, Qudus Wahab, Nick Kern, Puff Johnson & Leo O’Boyle.
- UCF landed a pair of transfers in Shemarri Allen & Jaykwon Walton. Allen spent two years at juco then two at UMKC, last year averaging 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game. Walton was at Georgia for two seasons, then last year was at Wichita State where he scored 13.9 points with 5.3 rebounds a game. Walton had originally committed to Alabama earlier this offseason, before legal charges led to him being turned away and thus re-opened his recruitment.
- Other notable transfer commitments included Jimmy Bell (West Virginia to Miss State), Victor Iwuakor (UNLV to Southern Miss), Will Shaver (UNC to UAB), RJ Sunahara (Nova Southeastern to Georgia), Phillip Russell (Southeast Missouri State to Texas-Arlington)
- With the portal closing for non-grad transfers on May 11, there were a number of late entries including Arthur Kaluma (Creighton), Julian Phillips (Tennessee), Ernest Udeh (Kansas), Malcolm Dandridge (Memphis), Jusaun Holt (Georgia), from UCLA Mac Etienne & Abramo Canka, Jalon Moore (Georgia Tech), D’Marco Dunn (UNC), Rondel Walker (TCU), Kruz Perrott-Hunt (South Dakota) & Ian Martinez (Maryland)
- Bonus note/FYI – in past years when players have entered the portal and at the same time the NBA Draft process then subsequently commit to another school, in virtually every circumstance they then withdraw from the NBA Draft, thus I am not treating players who have already announced a transfer commitment withdrawing from the Draft as “breaking news” as its pretty much a given, whereas committing to a new school then staying in the Draft would be newsworthy
