Following is every FBS team listed by conference with either the named QB starter (bolded), who the assumed/expected starter will likely be based upon an established previous starter returning, or who the probable candidates are although there are sure to be some surprises. Also included for each team are the last season QB stat leaders/those who got significant QB snaps for each team.

As teams officially name QB1s, release depth charts to start the season (usually within 1-2 weeks of first game), or significant injuries happen this list will be continually updated. Reminder – this list is only up until each team’s first game of 2022.

CFB: Fantasy-Relevant Players who have Opted Out

Some of these opt out announcements occurred before some conferences postponed their seasons, so it is unclear if some players who opted out of the fall might choose to play in the winter/spring. A few high-profile players who are likely NFL draft picks have opted out to begin training, while other players have done so due to personal COVID concerns.

To date the most high-profile opt-outs are QB Jamie Newman, RBs Kennedy Brooks & Kenny Gainwell, & WRs Ja’Marr Chase, Rashod Bateman (opted back in), Warren Jackson, Rondale Moore (opted back in) & Sage Surratt.

  • Purdue – Austin Burton transferred from UCLA, competing with Jack Plummer and Aidan O’Connell (started)
  • RutgersArtur Sitkowski (returns after playing then redshirting last season) and Noah Vedral (started) are listed with an OR, Johnny Langan also back after filling in
  • Wisconsin – last year’s starter Jack Coan was injured in preseason, so Graham Mertz will start

Conference USA:

  • Charlotte – last year’s starter Chris Reynolds returns
  • Florida Atlantic – with Chris Robison’s unexpected departure, Nick Tronti has been named the starter
  • Florida International – dual threat Kaylan Wiggins returns, may face competition from Max Bortenschlager (MD transfer) and Stone Norton – all 3 were listed with an OR on the first depth chart, Bortenschlager got the first snaps but Norton the most playing time in the opener
  • Louisiana TechAaron Allen took the first snaps after being listed with an OR with Luke Anthony on first depth chart
  • MarshallGrant Wells has been named the starter beating out Luke Zban, as Isaiah Green does not appear to be with the team despite reports he withdrew from the transfer portal
  • Middle Tennessee StAsher O’Hara returns
  • North TexasAustin Aune & Jason Bean were listed as co-starters for week 1, Bean actually got the start

  • Air Force – Donald Hammond is out as he is not in good standing as a cadet, Warren Bryan and Haaziq Daniels listed with an OR on the initial depth chart, Daniels actually started
  • Boise State – last year’s starter Hank Bachmeier returns and will start, as does his frequent injury replacement Chase Cord
  • Colorado StatePatrick O’Brien is back after throwing for 2803 yards when he took over for an injured Collin Hill, competing with Todd Centeio, a Temple transfer, listed with an OR on the depth chart
  • Fresno State Jake Haener (Washington transfer) has been named the starter over Ben Wooldridge, a reserve from last year
  • HawaiiChevan Cordeiro is back after being a sub for Cole McDonald at times last season
  • Nevada Carson Strong returns after throwing for 2335 yards last year
  • New MexicoTevaka Tuioti has been named the week 1 starter despite reports that Trae Hall has been taking the majority of first team reps early in camp. Brandt Hughes is out for the season with a shoulder injury.
  • San Diego StateCarson Baker (Ryan Agnew’s backup last season) will be the starter
  • San Jose StateNick Starkel (transferred from Arkansas) is listed with an OR with Nick Nash, Starkel got the week 1 start
  • UNLV Kenyon Oblad took over the position last year passing for 2081 yards, listed with an OR with Max Gilliam OR Justin Rogers (TCU transfer), Gilliam actually started but shared time
  • Utah StateJason Shelley was a late transfer from Utah and will start
  • WyomingSean Chambers dealt with injuries last year but is back, along with Levi Williams

Pac-12:

  • ArizonaGrant Gunnell, part-time starter with departed Khalil Tate last-season, returns
  • Arizona StateJayden Daniels is back from a freshman season where he threw for almost 3000 yards

  • Oregon – going into fall camp Tyler Shough is taking first team snaps, competing with Boston College transfer Anthony Brown
  • Oregon StateTristan Gebbia could be the favorite, Chance Nolan could compete
  • Stanford – Davis Mills comes back from a season where he split time, Jack West also returns, West actually started after Mills had a false positive which kept him out
  • UCLADorian Thompson-Robinson is back from passing for 2701 yards last year
  • USCKedon Slovis returns from a 3502 yard passing-season
  • Utah – Jake Bentley, South-Carolina transfer, and Cameron Rising likely in competition, Drew Lisk also listed on preseason depth chart
  • Washington – Jacob Sirmon may be the favorite, also Dylan Morris
  • Washington State – may be a wide-open competition between Cammon Cooper, Jayden de Laura, Gunner Cruz, and possibly others

SEC:

  • AlabamaMac Jones will be the starter, but may get competition from Bryce Young
  • ArkansasFeleipe Franks transferred from Florida, beating out KJ Jefferson
  • Auburn Bo Nix returns after starting last season
  • FloridaKyle Trask returns this year
  • Georgia – Jamie Newman (Wake Forest) opted out, JT Daniels (USC) has been cleared for practices and scrimmages but not officially medically cleared for games yet, D’Wan Mathis got the start
  • KentuckyTerry Wilson returns from injury and named starter, with others in the mix, Joey Gatewood’s waiver is still pending
  • LSUMyles Brennan has been named the starter, as expected
  • Mississippi State – Stanford-transfer KJ Costello was listed with an OR with Will Rogers, but Mike Leach said he expects Costello to start, last year’s part-time QB Garrett Shrader has been working at slot receiver
  • Missouri – has said they won’t announce before Game 1, Shawn Robinson got the OR with Connor Bazelek, Taylor Powell announced he will transfer – Robinson was the starter
  • Ole MissJohn Rhys Plumlee and Matt Corral again in competition this year, with an OR on the first depth chart, Corral actually got the start
  • South CarolinaCollin Hill (Colorado St transfer) named week 1 starter over Ryan Hilinski
  • Tennessee Jarrett Guarantano is the starter, Brian Maurer and JT Shrout also are back
  • Texas A&M – dual-threat Kellen Mond returns again
  • Vanderbilt – the depth chart has a 4-way OR between Ken Seals, Mike Wright, Danny Clark & Jeremy Moussa, Seals got the starting the nod

Sun Belt:

  • Appalachian StateZac Thomas returns from last season
  • Arkansas StateLogan Bonner will start game 1, Layne Hatcher was listed with an OR on the depth chart and is also expected to play
  • Coastal Carolina – Despite the Week 1 depth chart says Fred Payton OR Bryce Carpenter, it was Grayson McCall who actually started
  • Georgia SouthernShai Werts returns and named starter
  • Georgia StateCornelious Brown beat out Jamil Muhammad (Vanderbilt)
  • Louisiana (Lafayette)Levi Lewis returns
  • South Alabama Desmond Trotter QB1 on the depth chart
  • Texas StateBrady McBride, Memphis transfer, has been named the starter over Tyler Vitt

Independents:

  • ArmyChristian Anderson started game 1 over Jabari Laws, who may be dealing with an injury
  • BYUZach Wilson is back from injury and has been named the starter, Baylor Romney and Jaren Hall also got time in Wilson’s absence
  • LibertyMalik Willis (Auburn transfer) announced as the starter, listed as OR on the first depth chart with Chris Ferguson
  • UMass – Andrew Brito was not listed on the depth chart, Mike Fallon (the only other returner who threw a pass for the Minutemen last year) is OR with Josiah Johnson OR Will Koch

CFB Injuries & Updates – Sat-Sun August 22-23

The biggest news from the weekend was transfer related. On Saturday Washington State WR Davontavean “Tay” Martin announced he would transfer to Oklahoma State. Over the past 3 seasons Martin has totaled 143 receptions for 1615 yards and 18 TDs. Martin will likely apply for a waiver to be immediately eligible in attempts to join a WR corps led by Tylan Wallace.

Then on Sunday Colorado State TE Trey McBride announced he would remove his name from the transfer portal and remain with the team.

College Football Injuries and Updates List for August 22-23:

QBs:

  • Max Duggan, TCU – had a procedure for pre-existing heart condition and has begun recovery, no timeline was mentioned
  • TJ Goodwin, UTEP – opts out of season
  • Gavin Hardison, UTEP – named starter
  • Gunnar Watson, Troy – named starting QB

RBs:

  • Jacob Kibodi – back in the transfer portal, was at Texas A&M last season and had transferred to Incarnate Word
  • DJ Williams, Auburn – was seen wearing a non-contact jersey in practice last week, then held out of Saturday’s scrimmage, expected back next week

WRs & TEs:

  • TE Baylor Cupp, Texas A&M – healthy after season-long injury last year
  • Tay Martin – transfers from Washington State to Oklahoma State
  • TE Trey McBride, Colorado State – withdraws from transfer portal

CFB Injuries & Updates – Wed-Fri. August 19-21

The first news early on Wednesday was the biggest, as Wake Forest WR Sage Surratt chose to opt out of the season to prepare for the NFL Draft. In only 9 games last season Surratt had 66/1001-11 receiving.

Two big pieces of injury news from Thursday. First was South Carolina high-rated recruit RB MarShawn Lloyd tearing his ACL. Lloyd was set to be one of the top freshman running backs in the nation, but is now out for the season. Next was TCU QB Matt Duggan has been sitting out with an undisclosed condition that makes it sound like his season may be in doubt. Matthew Downing has been taking first team TCU QB reps in Duggan’s absence.

Friday didn’t have any groundbreaking news, with the possible highlights being Florida WR Trevon Grimes tweeting that he planned to play this season after missing several practices, and Texas Tech WR TJ Vasher returning to practice after some academic issues had caused him to miss earlier fall practices.

Not a huge news day after a very active Monday. Biggest transfer of the day was TE Trey McBride (Colorado State) who went for 45/560-4 last season, after Colorado St WR Warren Jackson announced yesterday he would skip the season to prepare for the draft, CSU has some huge receiving holes to fill.

CFB Injuries & Updates – Monday August 17

The biggest injury news of the day was that Florida State TE (UCLA grad transfer) Jordan Wilson will miss the season due to an undisclosed injury. The team plans to appeal for a medical waiver for next season.

On the transfer front WR Tay Martin of Washington State entered the transfer portal. Over the past 3 years Martin combined for 143/1615-18 receiving.

And 3 Florida WRs missed practice for unclear reasons – Kadarius Toney, Trevon Grimes & Jacob Copeland, something to monitor. And Texas Tech WR T.J. Vasher remains out taking care of academic issues, no clarity on how soon he might return.

CFB Injuries & Updates – August 15-16 Weekend

The weekend had some big news break, foremost with the opt outs of RB Kennedy Brooks (Oklahoma) & WR Warren Jackson (Colorado State). The Brooks news in combination with Trey Sermon’s transfer to Ohio State and Rhamondre Stevenson still serving a multi-game suspension from last season means that Oklahoma will be breaking in some new RBs this year. TE Grant Calcaterra (Oklahoma) also announced he was returning to football but would transfer.

The news this week has been dominated by teams and conferences trying to decide whether they were playing this fall or postponing to the spring, which postponed or limited practices for many teams.

Not many high-profile updates this week, perhaps the biggest being Marshall QB Isaiah Green withdrawing from the transfer portal, Georgia QB JT Daniels being cleared (later update: he is actually not yet medically cleared) while teammate QB Jamie Newman may be rehabbing a foot issue; at FSU WR DJ Matthews tweeting then deleting that he had a positive COVID test, which led to a brief player social media controversy at Florida State.
