CBB Player Updates – Week of Nov. 16-22

This week saw Eric Curry (Minnesota) announced to be available to start the season and Alexis Yetna (South Florida) to be fully cleared. But Jaylen Butz (DePaul) will miss the start of the season, and Tyson Jolly (SMU) has not been practicing with the team for personal reasons. And in tough news, Baylor’s Tristan Clark announced he was retiring from basketball due to knee issues.

- Warith Alatishe, Oregon State – eligible after transfer from Nicholls State

- Keion Brooks, Kentucky – still not full-participant in practice with calf injury
- Jaylen Butz, DePaul – will miss the start of the season for undisclosed reasons, no timetable given for return

This week Eric Hunter (Purdue) was announced to be out 6-8 weeks after a scrimmage injury, and Charles Minlend (Louisville) will be out around 6 weeks with a sprained MCL. In more positive news, Both Gach is eligible at Minnesota as is Erik Stevenson at Washington, and Samuell Williamson (Louisville) returned to practice this week, while Bryce Aiken (Seton Hall) was cleared to practice.

This week Robert Allen (Ole Miss), Jimmy Sotos (Ohio State), & Brendan Medley-Bacon (VCU) were ruled eligible to play this season after transfers. Ohio State’s Abel Porter will be out for the season with a medical condition and Daniel Batcho (Arizona) is out indefinitely with knee surgery. Samuell Williamson (Louisville) has not been practicing due to a knee injury. Creighton lost two players for the season with torn ACLs – Rati Andronikashvili and Modestas Kancleris.

CFB: Fantasy-Relevant Players who have Opted Out

Some of these opt out announcements occurred before some conferences postponed their seasons, so it is unclear if some players who opted out of the fall might choose to play in the winter/spring. A few high-profile players who are likely NFL draft picks have opted out to begin training, while other players have done so due to personal COVID concerns.
To date the most high-profile opt-outs are QB Jamie Newman, RBs Kennedy Brooks & Kenny Gainwell, & WRs Ja’Marr Chase, Rashod Bateman (opted back in), Warren Jackson, Rondale Moore (opted back in) & Sage Surratt.

Jairus Hamilton (Maryland) had his waiver for eligibility approved as did Mac McClung (Texas Tech) and Umoja Gibson (Oklahoma), while Nahziah Carter (Washington) remains suspended. Washington is also still waiting on waivers for Cole Bajema and Erik Stevenson. In injury news Kentucky’s Keion Brooks will be out another couple weeks with a leg injury.

The biggest player injury news this week was Nick Sherod of Richmond being announced out for the season with an ACL tear. Kentucky’s Olivier Sarr and South Alabama’s Michael Flowers were granted immediate eligibility.
In team news Marquette shut down all activities for 14 days for covid-related reasons on October 21, may resume November 4th. Toledo had 6 players test positive for covid as well.

As the volume of updates increase I will discern when to move from doing a weekly post to multiple posts per week. The biggest news so far this week has likely been UCF’s Collin Smith announcing he would opt out of the season.
